Koskisen launches an ecological decking board and fire-retardant sawn products
Koskisen sawn and planed goods will soon be available treated with a natural, water-based preservative. It is not corrosive and does not contain heavy metals.
- The trial marketing of treated decking boards last spring was a success, so we decided to include biologically treated sawn timber in our product range. Sales will be in full swing by the end of the year, once the necessary sales support materials are ready. We will start off in the domestic market, so that we can gather useful end-user experiences. However, we also intend to start exports on a tight schedule, says Kari Koskinen, Development Director at Koskisen Oy.
Ecological treatment
The preservative that offers protection against mould, rot, blue-stain and insects contains environmentally graded biocides and has been granted the M1 health certificate for low emissions. For exports it is important that the products are also resistant to termite infestations, which is necessary particularly in the tropical countries.
- We have strong faith in the biological treatment of timber. It is an ecological and sustainable method of treatment that brings clear benefits to the user,”Koskinen says.
Furthermore, disposal is environmentally friendly, because, unlike impregnated timber, which is hazardous waste, biologically treated timber can be disposed of by burning. Another Koskisen product launched this autumn is fire-retardant sawn timber that has received a Bs1d0 fire rating in tests.
- It is a technical product that can be used in applications such as exterior cladding and roof trusses for wooden apartment blocks and public buildings, and in wood construction in general, Koskinen says.
